How to Sleep Grounded with the Earthing Mattress Cover

Grounding while you sleep is one of the easiest ways to support your body’s natural balance.

By sleeping on the Earthing® Mattress Cover, you’re taking a simple but powerful step toward reconnecting with the Earth.

We are often asked questions about sleeping on the grounded Mattress Cover such as:

  • Can I wear pajamas while grounding?
  • Can I use a fitted sheet and still be grounded?
  • Do I need to have bare skin touching the Mattress Cover?

Here's what you need to know to get the most out of your grounded sleep experience.

Bare Skin Is Best—But Not Required

For the strongest connection to the Earth, direct skin contact with the grounded Mattress Cover is always best.

The more bare skin you have directly touching the cover, the more free electrons can immediately flow into you.

You can still experience grounding while sleeping with clothes on or when using a fitted sheet, as long as you understand how to do it correctly. Here are a two important rules to remember:

  1. Only one thin layer of material that is cotton, bamboo, or a cotton-poly blend may be between your bare skin and the Mattress Cover. You will become grounded as your body's natural moisture creates channels for the electrons to flow through the layer of material.
  2. The more bare skin you have touching the one layer of material, the better. Your bare skin areas are where you will become grounded.

Can You Wear Pajamas While Sleeping on the Earthing Mattress Cover?

Yes, you can absolutely wear pajamas while sleeping on the Earthing® Mattress Cover.

In this case, we do not recommend placing a fitted sheet over the Mattress Cover as this would create more than one layer of material between yourself and the grounding mat.

Is it possible to be grounded through two layers? Technically, maybe yes, but you'll have to work up a serious sweat and it will take quite awhile (if it happens at all).

How It Works: Your body produces a small amount of natural moisture, even if you don’t feel sweaty. This natural perspiration makes your pajamas conductive as long as they aren't made from a fully synthetic material. The electrons can travel through one layer of fabric, but two is a challenge.

Pajamas + Fitted Sheet: If you live in a cold environment and would really like to use a fitted sheet over the grounded Mattress Cover PLUS wear pajamas, you must keep some bare skin in direct contact with the fitted sheet. We recommend at least your legs as they have a lot of surface area. Rule of thumb: Consider anywhere there are two layers (fitted sheet + pajamas) to be areas where you will not be grounded.

Key Takeaways:

    • Best practice: Bare skin touching the Mattress Cover - you'll be instantly and fully grounded.
    • Pajama Material: Wear light, breathable sleepwear made from natural fibers like cotton, bamboo, or a cotton-poly blend. Do not wear pajamas made from fully synthetic material as you will not ground through it.
    • Fitted Sheet: Not recommended to use with pajamas. However, if you do use one, have as much bare skin as you can in direct contact with the fitted sheet. Your bare skin areas are where you will become grounded.

Can you use a fitted sheet over the grounded Mattress Cover?

Yes, you can absolutely place a fitted sheet over the Earthing® Mattress Cover.

In this case, we do not recommend wearing a full set of pajamas as this creates more than one layer of material between yourself and the Mattress Cover. We recommend wearing just underwear, or underwear with a tee-shirt to allow plenty of bare skin to be in contact with the fitted sheet.

If you live in a cold environment, or love your pajamas too much to give them up, remember that you must have some bare skin in contact with the fitted sheet as your bare skin is where you will become grounded.

Pro Tip: Try wearing clothing to bed to help warm it up. Once you and the bed are warm, remove as many pieces of clothing as you can and sleep that way. Remember: The more bare skin in contact with the fitted sheet, the better!

How It Works: Your body produces a small amount of natural moisture, even if you don’t feel sweaty. This natural perspiration makes your fitted sheet conductive, as long as it isn't a fully synthetic material, allowing the Earth’s electrons to travel through it and into your skin. Like we keep saying, the electrons can go through one layer of fabric, but two is a challenge.

Key Takeaways:

    • Material: Use a fitted sheet made from cotton, bamboo, or a poly-cotton blend. Do not use a fitted sheet made from a fully synthetic fabric.
    • Bare Skin: Touch the fitted sheet with as much bare skin as possible as this is where you will become grounded.
    • Pajamas: Not recommended. However, if you choose to wear pajamas, have plenty of bare skin directly touching the fitted sheet, as your bare skin is where you will become grounded.

What’s the Best Fitted Sheet to Use Over an Earthing Mattress Cover?

The best fitted sheets for grounding are:

    • 100% organic or conventional cotton
    • 100% organic or conventional bamboo

These fabrics are breathable and absorb enough moisture to allow for easy electron transfer from the mattress cover to your body.

A poly-cotton blend is alright to use, but is not optimal.

The worst fitted sheets are:

    • Synthetic fabrics like polyester and microfiber: They block the flow of electrons—meaning, you will not become grounded.

Can You Sleep with Socks On & Still Be Grounded?

Your feet are among the most conductive areas of your body, so sleeping barefoot is a great option when using a grounded Mattress Cover.

However, if you prefer wearing socks, choose natural fibers like cotton or bamboo, and sleep directly on the Earthing Mattress Cover. Remember: Only one layer of material should between your bare skin and the Mattress Cover.

Another option is to wear Earthing Grounded Socks. In this case, you can put a fitted sheet over the Mattress Cover, and get grounded through the socks while you snooze.

How Hydration Affects Grounding While You Sleep

There’s one more grounding tip that often gets overlooked: stay hydrated.

Water conducts electricity, and your body is mostly made of water. The more hydrated you are, the more efficiently electrons can move through your body, improving the effect of grounding. This is especially important when you’re using a fitted sheet or wearing pajamas to bed.

Getting the Most from Your Grounding Sleep Routine

Grounding while you sleep is one of the easiest and most effective ways to stay connected to the Earth’s natural energy. The Earthing® Mattress Cover makes this possible without changing your routine—but to get the best results, you must:

    • Use natural fibers for fitted sheets and sleepwear like cotton and bamboo.
    • Avoid synthetic materials.
    • Keep only one layer of material between your bare skin and the Earthing Mattress Cover.
    • Make as much skin contact as possible.
    • Stay hydrated.

Whether you sleep directly on the cover or prefer a fitted sheet on top, you’re still reconnecting with the Earth in a powerful way. The key is to sleep grounded the right way, and to remember to be patient with the process.

The beauty of grounding during sleep is you don’t have to do anything extra to get grounded each night. You just lie down, connect, and let the Earth do what it does best.
